Sadaqah in the context of a mosque refers to voluntary and charitable donations given to support the mosque’s operations, maintenance, and charitable activities. It is a form of giving beyond the obligatory Zakat. Sadaqah is a selfless act of generosity encouraged in Islam, but it is not a fixed percentage of one’s wealth like Zakat. Muslims are encouraged to give Sadaqah as they are able. Sadaqah serves to strengthen the community and promote acts of kindness, without the specific rules and regulations of Zakat.
Zakat is an obligatory form of almsgiving in Islam, requiring financially capable Muslims to annually give 2.5% of their accumulated wealth to specific categories of recipients in need, such as the poor and the indebted. This act purifies one’s wealth, promotes equity, and is a fundamental aspect of Islamic ethics. It aims to spiritually cleanse and grow one’s wealth, with a focus on benefiting the less fortunate, and is seen as a way to seek Allah’s pleasure while contributing to social justice and welfare.
Support 26 UCONN Students Facing Legal Fees for Peaceful Protests Against Genocide in Palestine
For 5 days, students held a peaceful protest at UConn-Storrs in opposition to the University’s ties to the genocide in Gaza. On April 25th, UConn campus police arrested one student, and five days later the University called the police again, arresting 25 more protestors.
We plan to raise donations in order to support these students in terms of legal fees.
